Do VR headsets require a PC?
Share
Not always 👍 — it depends on the type of VR headset you buy.
🟢 Headsets that do NOT need a PC
These are standalone headsets, meaning everything is built in.
-
Examples: Meta Quest 2 / 3, Pico 4, HTC Vive XR Elite.
-
They run on a mobile chip, like a phone or tablet.
-
All you need is the headset + controllers + play space.
-
Optional: You can connect some of them to a PC for better graphics, but it’s not required.
🔵 Headsets that DO need a PC
These are PCVR headsets, which rely entirely on your computer.
-
Examples: Valve Index, HTC Vive Pro, Pimax Crystal, older Oculus Rift.
-
They need a gaming PC with a strong GPU (e.g., RTX 3060 or better), enough RAM, and DisplayPort/USB ports.
-
They often have external base stations for tracking.
-
They give the best graphics and performance for sims, high-end VR games, and professional use.
🎮 Console-only headsets
-
Example: PlayStation VR2 → requires a PS5, not a PC.
-
Works only with the PlayStation ecosystem.
âś… Quick rule of thumb:
-
Standalone (Meta Quest, Pico): No PC needed, but optional.
-
PCVR (Valve, HTC, Pimax): PC required.
-
Console VR (PSVR2): Console required.
